I've seen M1889s with both one and two bands in different configurations made by different manufacturers at different times. The Gewehr 98 (abbreviated G98, Gew 98 or M98) is a German bolt action Mauser rifle firing cartridges from a 5 round internal clip -loaded magazine that was the German service rifle from 1898 to 1935, when it was replaced by the Karabiner 98k. The total number of M 98 rifles made at Erfurt is, it appears, unknown but is certainly a six-digit number. Some of the rifles are marked with a 'star' indicating manufacture from parts made at Erfurt and supplied from elsewhere. Is there any way to determine how old it is and if it qualifies for antique status? I know FN started up in 1889 to make the M1889, I can't imagine it took them over 9 years to make 6000 rifles? Is this information available anywhere?Īlso, the rifle in question has two barrel bands. The production of M 98 rifles did not begin at Erfurt until 1916 and had reached 275 a day by June that year. ![]() I'm looking at an FN-made Belgian 1889 Mauser, serial number 57XX.
